I ‘m hoping that someone can shield some light on a small problem I am having with my
      1955 RDE-17 25 HP Johnson.
I don’t know how the mercury switch wire enters the engine compartment.
On my engine the mercury switch wire goes under the number 19 grommet (that just don’t seem correct)
Also the mercury switch wire is not attached to anything.
How does the mercury switch wire go on the engine?

I thought there was a hole in the pan where the mercury switch
wire ran through. It’s all apart now, but I’ll look at the pan to see.
Can’t remember the orientation of my switch, but it might only
work if it’s mounted the correct way.

        Prepare to be boarded!

There’s a hole in my front pan, that appears to be factory. It’s exactly
3" from the end of the front pan (where the two pans butt.).
I’m pretty sure that’s where my switch wire was routed to from
the mercury switch. But then, the wire went out the front grommet
along with the battery cables, then evidently to the "start button"
          acting as the ground circuit.

Are you sure that hole isn’t hiding under the rubber seal?
The hole on mine is pretty close to the pan rim that the
rubber seal goes on. It’s possible that someone
drilled it on my pan, but it’s exactly 3" from the end of the pan!

                You were right Buc
The hole was hidden by the hood seal.I ‘m surprised that Johnson never put a grommet there to prevent chaffing.
Now I need to figure out what to use to cut a 2 inch hole in the front lower pan for the carb to breathe

I presumed the big hole in my front pan was factory,
but now, in looking at the parts diagram, they only
show a little hole in the same area.
Does yours not have the big hole like mine?

There was a service bullitin that directed you to open that little hole up to a much larger size. The motors would suffocate due to lack of air.

Garry or Frank posted it. This would be a critical mod.

Mine does not have the two inch hole.
Any suggestions on what method to cut the hole.
I was planning on using this
Yes I know I will ruin it and it is meant for wood

If you’re in a hurry, try it, using a little oil for a coolant / lubricant.
Otherwise, they make the same thing but for cutting metal.
