        Just like 1957!
Starts right up and idles nicely. 1 &1/4 turns out on the low idle screw and the same on the high idle screw, Surprised with the power this has on full throttle! I didn’t keep it there but a second but, that is some serious power in an 18hp!

I was stuck, frustrated and out of ideas and you guys figured it out! It was the wrong points and the foot rub on them was too high! You’re all AWESOME!

Now on to my 1960 Evinride 75HP Starflite( I have heard some people call it a V4?) It starts up but, wont stay running, so I put on a new OEM fuel pump and cleaned the brass port where the fuel tank line attaches to the engine. The port was almost completely occluded with 50 years of gunk. If it still has issues, I’ll be posting another question on a new thread for you guys. Thanks so MUCH!

        Thank you so much!

Wow! Thank you for all the good info!!
Aftr Crosbys response, I decided to replace the old points I took off and use the Timing tool again and TA DA! It now lines up! The points I bought off of ebay were either wrong ones or just crap. The rubbing foot was definitely bigger.
I would not have thought of this! I was starting to think I was losing my mind in some fashion(which I probably am BTW)
            Thank you again.

I will now go out to run it and update…..

I just saw your post here. I’m glad the guys helped you figure out the issue. Unfortunately some of the aftermarket points that are being introduced are of poor quality!

Richard’s remake of the factor timing tool is excellent. Using an analog meter or an instrument of continunity to find the precise time the points should open and timing the firing of both cylinders 180 degrees apart allows the motor to idle better and smoother.

As the guys stated, when using the timing fixture, please disregard the gapping the points at 0.020 and the placement of the points shoes on the points cam.

            Glad things worked out!!!

You should be able to set the aftermarket points just fine with this tool. Just do t check the gap after setting them. The gap doesn’t matter.
After retreading all posts I guess some points are so bad they can’t be set. Haven’t had that problem yet but it’s to bad companies make such junk and sell it.

Thanks again for all your help! I love working on these things if I have the right tools and good instructions! The sound of that 2 cycle engine blazing is music!!! Cheers!
