      Gentlemen,
A question about the current accepted lower unit oil for a 1968 Evinrude 6 HP. Original manuals call for Type C, no longer available. I picked up a container of BRP Hi-Vis that says "recommended for all models made after 1973". I suspect it’s OK to have something other than water in there. But I have been bitten by "after market" parts( a non OMC impeller) and try to avoid them. Thanks for your input!

For a period in the 60’s OMC was recommending type C ( thinner lube needed for electric shift) in all their gearcases. It is perfectly fine to use regular 80w lower unit lube in the conventional shift lowers. Type C is still available, renamed as BRP premium if I remember right.

That Hi Vis that you bought will be fine for your 6hp. Actually, I do not know how BRP arrived at that 1973 cutoff date.

EDIT: Well actually, I guess I do. 1972 was the last of the Hydro-Electric gearcases. So 1973 avoids Electric shift and Hydro-Electric shift.

One more question off the list.
