This 1970 Fisherman parts list shows it has rubber
mounts. Were "all" of this type engine prone
to broken mounts, or were they improved by 1970?
ME list the mounts for (1) $75 and (2) $64.
That would add to the cost of a possible
cheap project engine in a hurry, even without
all the other possible parts needed.
Thanks.Prepare to be boarded!
March 24, 2017 at 2:23 pm #54807I don’t think I’ve ever had to replace the mounts on any of the 5.5//6/7.5 series of mids. 18/20/25 hp models, yes, but not he smaller ones…
March 24, 2017 at 3:42 pm #54813The only time the mounts usually break is when the nut is corroded to the shaft and either the threaded shaft breaks or it pulls out of the moulded rubber when trying to undo the nut. The end of the threaded part is rounded like a carriage or elevator bolt and can be refastened to the rubber using super glue and pinching in a vice. Finding a good used one should be easy and I always save them from donors just in case.
Maybe it’s just me but I find ME’s prices are getting ridonculous and their shipping charges and import fees along with the exchange rate have put them to the bottom of my Xmas list. I avoid them like the plague now.
March 24, 2017 at 9:21 pm #54821I’m confused, why do you think the mounts are broken? Did I miss something in the ad/link you posted.
That gearcase looks kinda rough, I would change the lube to make sure it isn’t full of water….I see what might be a crack in the casting towards the leading edge of the gearcase….This was not uncommon on these engines, water would freeze and bulge the gearcase out. Usually, this condition has no effect on the gear lube though….March 24, 2017 at 10:43 pm #54825Fleetwin, outboard is at auction. I have not seen it.
I have a 1966 Evinrude 9.5 hp that came with my
boat, that has broken mounts. I remember reading
on the board a couple of years ago that it was
a common problem.
Thanks for the replies.Prepare to be boarded!
March 24, 2017 at 11:49 pm #54830The 6hp has totally different mounts than the 9.5hp motors.
March 25, 2017 at 1:24 am #54836Dave, thanks for the reply. So it sounds like it’s mostly the 9.5
and larger motors with the problem mounts, and
not usually the 6 hp.Prepare to be boarded!
March 25, 2017 at 1:28 am #54837Actually, the low-pro 9.5 is kind of in a class.of it’s own for motor mount breakage / issues. The smaller and larger motors have much fewer problems with mounts. I have four 6hp OMCs one of which has lived a VERY interesting existence and not a single broken motor mount in the batch.
