      Putting the gear case back together and did not note (as usual) of the correct position for the C clip.
      Should the flat side face the bearing, or the gears?

        Look closely at the groove and you will answer your own question. One side of the groove is tapered to match the tapered side of the snap ring.

          Thanks Frank, checked the groove with a magnifying glass and saw the taper.
