      When using anaroebic gel sealers on crankcase halves,is a primer necessary?I am using Loctite 518.

        I never have – used it for many years on many motors. I just make sure the surfaces are absolutely clean.

          You only need the primer/accelerator if the motor is going to be used right away after working on it. Otherwise, letting it sit overnight will be enough time for the sealer to set up.

          The anaerobic sealers work by reacting with the trace amounts of copper in the aluminum so if the metal is dirty or has a film on it, they won’t set up properly. The primer is a green color from its copper content and that’s how it accelerates the curing process.

            Yes, like the guys say, proper set up is so important….The last thing anyone wants to see after firing up a fresh rebuild is a crankcase leak!
