A friend was given this years ago.
He got an impeller and modified
It to work. He hasn’t had it out much
but it actually run pretty well so far.
I know Frank fed his family on these.
      We have a few questions.

1: Crankcase puddle drain outlet. Somebody decided to put a piece of hose (plugged??) on it. It is supposed to dribble excess gas..Yeah, I know, frowned upon nowadays.

2: Slow speed air/fuel ratio adjustment. "Normal" carbs have a needle & knob, but who said this is normal?

3: OK, leak fix by epoxy. Certainly not factory.

They made tons of those 5D10 motors. Same lower unit as a TNxx Johnson. Mine would run circles around the TN that I had at the same time.

Wide open it really does well but slow & idle
have issued. This could be the reason?

I have basically the same motor, a 1951 5hp Sea King. Great little motor – starts on one or two yanks. Here’s some pics

              Possibly.

When making idle adjustments move the speed control toward start before turning the screw in – Other wise it can dig into a sticky throttle valve and mess up the taper. I have only had to replace one of those valves, but it was enough to make me cautious . . . 😉

I was always confused by that adjustment on the side of the carb
that said "Rich" with an arrow. When taking the carb apart, from
my recollection, it seemed nothing more that an idol stop for
the throttle spool. Am I missing something on "Carb theory"?

I almost take offense to hearing "Butt Ugly Buccaneer",
but I have my grandpa’s old three horse up in the rafters,
                    the same lovely color. 😆

It was fast too, I use to be able to beat my buddy with this
                    5 hp TD Johnson.

Run a "normal" carburetor at idle and with your finger, open the carb throttle shaft. It more than likely will lean sneeze and stall. That is an over simplification of what’s involved here. This one is a variable venturi carb. Holding the throttle valve part way open actually varies the venturi size. Every time I sit down and reason it all out, I forget the whole thing till the subject comes up again. Then Duh-h-h-h- Hey, it works. That’s good for me.

An adjustable venturi actually makes sense. Thanks Frank!
