Has anybody ever tried to repair a crack in a coil casing. 1960 JW 3hp. Coils are readily available but this one has good spark and just a minor crack starting to appear in casing. Was wondering if any members have ever used a sealant with success.
      Thanks much

get two while you are at it…. and get 3-4 feet of some nice brand new metallic core plug wire ! no carbon stuff

clean the points and you good for years and years of boating pleasure

Yeah – I wouldn’t take a chance with coils beginning to crack.

As stated, they will throw a spark, but WILL fail on the water. Always toss them.

If you would like to experiment you could try using this.
You still have 1 cylinder to get you home. As to what is
taking place to the covering to cause it to crack – this
may be just the first of many cracks to come. If you
decided to continue using it and it doesn’t fail you
should check it at least yearly.

It’s just going to keep on cracking and leave you stranded – Replace it!

I’ve often thought of the time back in the day, when a customer brought in a 5hp Gale Sea King, complaining of hard starting an poor performance. A quick check revealed cracked coils, which I said had to be replaced. The guy was skeptical and doubted my diagnosis. Nevertheless, he consented when I told him it would run like new when I got done with it.

Fast forward a couple of weeks, and he was back. He sez "you lied. You told me it would run like new, and it doesn’t. It runs BETTER than new!"

Super Corona Dope is good stuff, but I just use it on
old, hard to come by, coils, as it’s spendy, but a little
                    bottle goes a long way.

That is good stuff – Way back in a past life, I used to use it on high voltage flyback transformers in old TV sets. The problem is that insulation eventually breaks down between coil windings internally where you can’t do anything about it.
