Picked up a rudder twin that was stuck. I got it un-stuck!Attached picture of wires looks pretty bad. Can these be rebuilt? Is there any info on how to rebuild them? or would I be wasting my time?

      Any advice appreciated. Thank you
      Bill

Yes they can be rebuilt. Lots of threads on that here on the forum. Check the coil, if it fails, you can use a zephyr coil.

Most of the work is cleaning out the old material!

Lots of experts on this forum on this

Yes they can be repaired as stated above.
It has been my experience that the common failure mode with them is the internal condenser (capacitor) goes bad.
If the coil secondary is still good then the capacitor and wiring can be repaired and the coil will throw hot spark again.

Here is one option for the coil.

Have a couple others floating around in my head
but haven’t gotten around to them yet.

This will give you the basics of the timer.

Points are no longer being made and if you
screw them up replacing them can be difficult
and expensive. If no one has been in there ahead
of you just some cleaning is likely all it will need.

I followed Tub’s advice and rebuilt a Ruddertwin coil with a Zephyr coil. It seemed to work well. The entire time I was doing it I couldn’t help wondering if there was a more modern coil that would be suitable. I haven’t looked into it, but it sure would be nice to pick up a brand new coil instead of using 70 year old replacements.

Once stuff was made to last. Now it is
purposely made not to last too long.
For the most part these 90 year old
Super Elto coils are still good. Its just
the wire that has failed. A 70 year old
Zephyr coil that is still working as it
should could easily out last most of
the stuff that comes from China and
                  the like today.

In regard to replacing points: go to Atwater-Kent ignition parts an you will find the points for Ruddertwin, Speedster and ’28-30 Quad under the brand name of 2 dozen teens thru 20’s Auto’s using the same AK ign parts. At present there is a set for $20.00, look at the picture. Jim Ross

That’s true, but I don’t want to buy a Zephyr every time I want to fix an ELTO 🙂
