      what type of grease do you use in the lower unit of a Johnson FD12 18hp 1958?

        80/90 wt heavy duty gear oil. If the seals are bad, John Deere Corn Head grease will do until you replace the seals. . . 😎

          You don’t use grease in those gearcases. They take 80W-90 or 90 weight marine grade gear oil meant for outboard motors. Grease was usually used in older direct drive gearcases.

              Use any good outboard gear oil. I use Sierra Premium gear oil that I buy in a 5 gallon pail because I use so much of it in a wide variety or motors, but any 80 to 90 weight outboard gear oil will work. I don’t recommend same weight gear oils that are not for outboard use, as outboard oils have an additive that will emulsify small amounts of water, preventing damage. Automotive gear oils do not have this.

              If you don’t have a lot of motors that use this oil, I recommend buying a quart (or Liter) and getting a hand pump to put on the bottle. As with other motors, pump it in the drain until it comes out the vent.
