I was cruising the net and came across this old outboard motor. Looks like one of those dark side motors, maybe. A ton of work to get it back in shape for sure. Anybody know what it is?

I *think* it’s an old Firestone built by Scott-Atwater. I’ve got one that awfully similar.

I say "pardon me" a lot. I had a 20H, then raced open mod sleds.

I agree. The four-bolt head dates it to ’46 . Most other parts interchange with later Scott/Firestone etc singles, maybe even into the ’60s.

            I agree – Firestone by Scott Atwater . . . 😀

The newer models had lower cowlings added.

Thanks guys, the gear case shows a left hand twist in the propeller. That is usually a Mercury thing! Had me puzzled! Maybe it is an early motor change. Defiantly NOT mercury and a lot of work to bring her back to glory.

thanks again you guys are the best

I think that is a pre-war Scott-Atwater built Champion. Yes sold thru Firestone. Notice the Champion style lower unit and funky cast gas tank. Very different than post-war Scott/Firestones.
Offhand, I’d say it is pretty rare (??)

EDIT: The history of it can be read in the Old Outboard Book, listed under Champion.

Not an exact match, but you can see the resemblance here:

Still close, but not quite. Wrong midsection. Keep looking, we’ll find it yet.
