Not being an electrician, I do not understand why if a power supply outputs 7.5 volts and appears regulated, how this might adversely effect the MercoTronic unit.

You are right Richard; as long as the max rated current is not exceeded by very much. All supplies, even regulated ones, start dropping below their rated voltage when you get above the maximum current they are rated at.

Now I have seen supplies that specify they are regulated over a given current range, like from 1 to 3 amps, and the voltage will vary outside the specified range, but these regulated supplies are rare today with switching-regulator technology.

So is the Power supply I posted about acceptable? It is what I use, but like others have said I use it so rarely and for such a short period of time…
don’t want to ruin my tester

Which power supply did you post about? I only see Mumbles posting about specific supplies in this thread – I may have somehow missed it?

I just ordered one similar to yours Richard, a GSM60A07-P1J model as it had a bit more amperage and a three prong power supply but maybe I should have ordered the GSM60B07-P1J switching model with a two prong instead? But like you say, I don’t think it will really matter as they are only used for short periods of time.

              The switching model.

Non linear load rate at 200% of peak load. Same applies to light shows. Peak load was 100 amp & installed a 200 amp secondary step down trans & smoke was no longer part of the show. Not to be used with neon transformers as overloading will quad the voltage, again letting the smoke out 🙂 /size]

Does anyone have a circuit for the MercoTronic? If it has no transistors or other solid state devices, a power supply can likely be way over or under 7.5 volts without hurting it. I’d be happy to analyze the circuit and give further power supply recommendations (and maybe copy it for a tester for myself) if anyone has a circuit diagram
