      The motor won’t pull through more than one cycle for each cylinder,then the recoil stops with a clank.I let the rope recoil,pull it again and same thing happens.Starter latch has not been installed so that’s not an issue.With plugs out,recoil works fine.Luckily the motor usually starts on 2nd pull.What I hear is two exhaust thumps and a clank when it stops.It is definitely recoil noise,not from the motor.

        these recoil and correct line up adjustments are covered in the bible….starting page 289 for RD’s

        some of these oldies have compression relief to facilitae starting by dropping compression …check it out maybe yours needs a check up

        it is all in the bible

          The RD-19 was th first to have compression relief. . . 😕

            These motors also have a locking lever(#11 in Garry’s first picture) that prevents the recoil from working if the throttle is too far advanced if in gear. This could be in need of adjustment on your motor.
