I just picked up a Sea King 3.5 hp motor. Model # VWB27903A. I am having a hard time finding a parts listing or owners manual. At issue is a brass bushing for the prop shaft that is leaking lower unit lube out. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Montgomery Wards sold their badge named Seaking outboards.

Your year and model motor, was made by Chrysler and sold by Montgomery Wards. Eatons chain stores sold outboards like Montgomery Wards, but they used the badge name Viking.

Prior to 1964 Montgomery Wards and Eatons sold outboard made by the Gale outboard company.

So here is a manual for your 3.5hp Chrysler made Seaking, but manual is for a Viking. It is the same motor just different decals and nobs.

I think your motor used marine grease in the lower unit. I maybe mistaken, but that is what is listed in the literature.

Lubriplate 105 or Cornhead grease are some lower unit gear grease.

If I am mistaken, someone will correct my information.

          Cheers,

I was incorrect with my information. Lower units used a marine type 90wt gear oil.

Thanks for the information – the manual is very helpful! I am still looking for a parts list for that motor or if anyone has suggestions on replacing the brass propeller bushing, or at least stopping the oil from leaking out.

Sorry, last night I did not fully explain my reasoning for telling the Seaking and Eaton story. Well with Gale motors no longer producing outboards, Montgomery Wards(SeaKing) and Eatons(Vikings) had to find another supplier. Gale stop producing in 1963/64. So, Chrsyler eventually picked up the contract of supplying outboard for Montgomery Wards (Seaking). 1965 Chrysler had just purchased the West Bend outboard motor company. West bend was known for making Elgin outboard (Sold by Sears). Sears had just realigned with a new producer and dropped the Elgin/Westbend line.

In January of 1965 Chrysler bought the entire plant and outboard operation. In 1965 the outboard hoods said "West Bend by Chrysler". In the following year West Bend was phased out and the outboard carried the "Chrysler" name.
This ends the West Bend brand name and the history of the Hartford, Wisconsin outboard production picks up with Chrysler.

The Elgin/Westbend 2hp later became the 3.5hp aircooled outboard. Chrylser still produced the 3.5hp Elgin make for many years. You will notice alot of similarities between the Westbend 3.5hp and the Chrysler 3.5hp outboard. It is finding a Westbend 3.5hp outboard parts manual that will help you find the parts list for your Chrsyler(Seaking) 3.5hp motor.

LOL….confused you yet!!!! I hope I have not lost you in the muddle above.

I have supplied a Chysler 3.5hp outboard condenser manual and a Westbend 3.5hp condensed manual so you can see the very close similarities.

Well, with our current site being upgraded tomorrow and day after. Certain functions are working. It will not allow me to post the condense manuals. If you Private Message (PM) your email. I will send you the manuals. I am working on finding a parts diagram.

                Cheers,

I have found a honest and true service manual for your motor. The parts diagram that I have found is a 1974 Chrylser 3.6hp list on http://www.marineengine.com. That is the closest and very possibly unchanged seal and orientation diagram, but I am not 100% sure. You could call them and they may have matching information in there listing.

Ben Dittmar is our Chrysler guy and could set you straight. His youtube channel is Chrysler Outboard dude.

Please PM me your email and I will send you those Service manuals this afternoon or evening.

                  Cheers,

Let me know if you get them or not.

It sounds like the propeller shaft seal is damaged. If the Marineengine.com is unable to help, then you can measure the existing seal and find one that will be a good match.
