hello,i am working on a 1965 3hp evinrude.i tried to remove the fuel filter but only the connector came out and the filter is stuck in the tank.is there any easy way to get it out.i tried using a screw extractor very lightly but it didnt work.should i just leave it where it is.will it work itself loose after a while?i looked up a new filter at marineengine.com and it is expensive.are there any cheaper alternatives?

Use a hair dryer to grently heat around the fitting area. Then drop a 16 penny nail in the opening. Tap gently with a hammer and it should drop into the tank. Fish the filter out and soak it in CLR for short time. You can blow air to test if gas will flow thru it. The shut off valve may show where the filter was soldered. Solder the 2 pieces together and reinsert. Good Luck, Ed

I have that filter NOS. $20 mailed to you. BUT I would back flush the filter well. That filter can usually be cleaned very easily. Auto Zone makes the best carb cleaner in the world-watch it or it will eat paint. Stan in Ohio. scj616@aol.com

I had 2 soaking all winter. Couple of months in Gumout
and then in Berryman B-12 . Couldn’t get the bottoms
cleaned out. Both were in motors where the gas was left
in them and then they sat for decades. Put an in line on
the motor I wanted one for. I think I still have them.
If I do what else should I try?

                Tubs,
I use evaporator coil cleaner on even old Merc in tank filter. Bright green looking stuff made for spraying aluminum coils to clean them. Get it a a refer repair warehouse type business. It has never failed me,

I ordered some on line for a Merk filter.
Spray foam in a can. The filter was stained and possibly
plugged in places. Didn’t do anything.

Just buy a new filter. Don’t mess around trying to repair/clean a 50+ year old filter.

My understanding is they are no longer available.
You have a source for them?
