Long story short, I had to disconnect the fuel line from the carb. Instead of the hose pulling off of the barb, the barb pulled out of the carb.

What is supposed to hold the barb in? It almost looks like it was soldered…..but you can’t solder to an aluminum casting.

Is the "factory insertion" supposed to be permanent? Stated differently: am I screwed?

i don’t think I’ve ever had that happen on one of those carbs.. is that lead on the end? You may be able to simply tap it back in.
If nothing else, a little Marine Tex Epoxy on the outside will do the job. It works on my old Ford tractor anyway.

It does look like lead…..as if it had been soldered in.

I don’t have any Marine Tex….but I do have JB Weld. I suspect that would work just as well. It claims to be gasoline proof once cured.

Or try red Locktite. Good with metal on metal.

I’ll take a drop or two of locktite any day over mixing up messy epoxy.

Why? Ease of use or better capability of the Loctite product?

(I used JB Weld last night…)

I think you’ll be fine with the JB weld. It won’t come apart now and if you got it all around it shouldn’t leak. I probably would have used the same thing.

I haven’t had good results with JB Weld and gas. Tried to put the drain screen on the pickup tube back on a fifties OMC tank and it did not hold. Cleaned it well before application with a wire wheel, and brake cleaner.
                      Just my experience.

So how are these fuel barbs supposed to be held in place?
