Ok so as it turns out i do have resistance on the coil itself of 0.5 ohms but I have no resistance between either of the spark plug attach points and each other or to either side of the winding is this normal. This engine was made almost 60 years before I was born so I’m doing a lot of learning haha the coil measurements from mounting hole to mounting hole are 4 inches for the wider holes and 3.5 inches for the narrower hole the coil itself is 2.85 inches long and 1.6 inches in diameter. Thank you in advance for all the help.

What Tom said … Also, before embarking on a major project, consider what your intended use of the motor. Does is have spark now? Just because you see an open on the secondary the coil can still produce a spark. Is this condition ideal? no! but unless you intend to use the motor in regular/ reliable service the existing condition may be OK for occasional runs but not for venturing out across the Atlantic.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

Test the secondary (high voltage) winding as depicted in Tubs post. On a good coil you should see about 7, 000 to 8,000 ohms. The reading of 0.5 ohms that you saw was for the primary ( low voltage) coil. 0.5 t0 1 ohm is good. Extremely rare for the primary winding to be bad

As Tub said, the Zephyr coils should work.
I found an old one today and did some measurements.
It shouldn’t be too hard to find a couple of good Zephyr coils,
or cheap parts motors for that matter.

                Hello,

sorry to jump in here without a knowledge base, but trying to glean information about the older motors – I have a Johnson A-50.  So I’m not sure what I have but may have to replace eventually, but I thought stranded wire was used for spark plug wires rather than solid.   Since no one said anything, is solid core the norm or standard for these vintage spark plug wires?  thank you, carl

I’ve never run across an outboard of any vintage with
solid core wire, always stranded core copper, and
                  maybe aluminum rarely.
