I put a pump impeller in this lower unit and noted the impeller drive pin was short. When I tried motor in barrel no water. I took apart again and the drive pin is below the plate under impeller. The drive shaft hits bottom with the pin hole about 1/8 ” below the plate. Is this condition repairable ?

Snap ring is missing from bottom of pinion gear. Drive shaft normally rests on the snap ring.

Doesn’t that snap ring go on the bottom of the shaft below the pinion to prevent the shaft from being pulled out?

I’m not sure how a missing snap ring would allow the shaft to drop down.

What I said is my story and I’m sticking to it. The drive shaft rests on the snap ring.

After sleeping on it, I’ll bet the snap ring goes inside the bottom of the pinion gear. It’s been a while but that would make more sense.

I got it fixed, got a snap ring from NAPA for .25 cents . Its amazing how easy a evinrude gear case is to take apart compared to Mercury.
