          the red book does not mention any FD10 L more likely just a FDE-10 …experts will tell if they made long shaft FD10 in 1956

              A long shaft would be an FDL-10.. There were a few mid-year changes made in 1956. I assume the trailing L would indicate those changes, although I don’t have the specific parts book. One of the most serious changes was the lower crankshaft seal.

                so….what is the distance in inches clamp to cavitation plate ? that will tel you the answer 18=Short >18=long

                      FD-10 L denotes it is a short shaft model, which is confirmed by your photo. As mentioned, the L identifies a production change somewhere. At least three versions of non electric shorties were built in ’56. the FD-10, FD-10 L, and the FD-10 S.

                        My understanding is that the L is the production run number (which may include changes). Run numbers start at B. L would be the 12th run.
