How one suppose to hold the impeller drive key on the driveshaft “flat”
while getting the impeller started in the pump housing?
You can’t rotate the impeller to get it started with the key there.
It’s possible for the key to fall down between the driveshaft
and housing center hole, never to be seen again, if you’re not careful.

I thought about pulling the impeller housing back out, install the impeller,
and try to slide the whole affair over the key as it sits in the flat, but
I had a hard enough time just getting the pump housing on the suction
tube as it was.

The manual I have just says “install it”.
How’s it suppose to be done?

Note the “red stuff”on the flat, lol.
The problem is I can’t drop the impeller straight down in the housing
and get the impeller fins in the hole. If you rotate the impeller,
you can’t keep the key in place.

I was just thinking that maybe a thin sleeve over the impeller to
collapse the impeller diameter so it would drop straight down
into the pump housing might work. ???

2 ways
1 make a holder for the impeller from a PVC pipe that holds the impeller with the vanes folded.
2 grease the pump and turn the drive shaft and impeller at the same time while pushing down on the impeller.

On some small Merc impellers, I’ve used real small zap straps to hold the vanes in position while trying to get it in. I like Daves idea of using a piece of PVC pipe better though.

I’ve used the pvc pipe on a KG4 impeller. I had to carve outside with a Dremel to fit the cavity.
I’ve used the mini zip tie on an 84 4hp Merc .
Is it possible to line up the impeller with the notch, lift up the driveshaft just enough to drop the pin in?. I might be miscomperstanding. Frank R will know for sure

Thanks for the ideas. I’ll play around tomorrow with the zip tie idea first, then pvc
pipe, if I find any close to the correct size.

Pack the grove with grease so the pin does not fall thru if you are worried.

I got the impeller installed a little while ago.
I used a piece of 1-1/2″ OD thin wall pvc
sink drain. The impeller was a tight fit
inside the pvc, and it took a couple of tries
to get all the vanes bent the same direction.
I was then able to slide the impeller over the
key without much ado.
I’ll have to rig up a bucket of water and do the drill
test soon, before I proceed much further.

Here’s the pvc piece I used. I think it’s actually a 1-1/4″ to 1-1/2″ bushing.
Besides the aluminum puck in the “bailer” pump cavity, I put a solid gasket
under the top cover to block the outlet to the bailer foot.

Maybe tomorrow I’ll hook up the drill and see if it will pump water.
