I removed the driveshaft with the water pump cartridge and
ball bearing today, by first removing the bolt holding the
driveshaft pinion gear on, then placed the driveshaft in the
vice. Next heated the gearcase in the cartridge area, and
used my maple block and hammer to tap it apart.
There’s a small, vertical locating pin on the pump cartridge
that got lost in the process. I made sure it’s not hiding inside
      the gearcase somewhere.

The pinion gear “tab lock washer” is in sad shape.

I removed the Forward gear, by first trying a little heat
and wrapping on the gear house with a plastic mallet.
The bearing and gear did drop down about 1/4″, but
      refused to go further.
I then fabricated some puller arms to use on my slide hammer.
I was worried about damaging the needle bearing, but all
seems well. It popped out fairly easy.

Another view of the bottom side of the water pump cartridge,
showing seal. Hopefully that wont be an issue to remove.

Tomorrow I’ll rig something up to remove the brass retaining
nut which holds the shift shaft and it’s seal in place.
That’s just a thick rubber washer sitting on top of the
        brass retainer, not the seal.
I tried my needle nose for a removal tool….. did not work!

vice grip will take the shift shaft nut out but there is no alignment on the splines.

vice grip will take the shift shaft nut out but there is no alignment on the splines.

I noticed that there’s no “flats” on the top side of the shift shaft,
and I presume there isn’t on the bottom side either, that engages
into the shift cam. Therefore I see no real shift shaft adjustment,
other than making sure the shift cam is in Forward position, and the
shift handle is in the Forward notch, when putting it all back together.

I could use vise grips on the shift shaft brass nut, but I’m always
looking for a reason to play with the lathe and milling machine!
            Thanks

The brass shift shaft retainer was surprisingly tight,
but my new tool worked great.
I have to await the new seals, etc., so time to move on
to other parts of the motor for a while.
