From what I’m told, the subject motor is very similar to it’s Mercury Mark 25 big brother.
As mentioned the other day, it jumped into forward all by itself when
      running.
I pulled the powerhead today so I can work on the shifter mechanism.
There’s a notched pieced attached to the shift handler, and a spring clip
that rides in the notches to act as a detent.
I’m not sure if there’s any other detent, i.e, a spring loaded ball,
under the handle mechanism or not?

At any rate, it appears I need to remove the throttle shaft that crosses
over the shifter mechanism, so I can remove the three 5/16″ bolts
that hold the shift shaft and mechanism in place.

So far I’m not able to remove the big nut to remove the tiller handle
and throttle shaft. The locking tabs washer is “unlocked”, but the threaded
shaft to which the nut is on, wants to turn with the nut.
Any ideas if I’m on the right track as far as procedure, or how to get
      the big nut off?
      Thanks.

Large nut may be left hand thread.

Dave, I thought of that, but I’m pretty sure the threaded
shaft turned on me either way I tried loosening the nut.
          There’s always tomorrow. Thanks!

take the elbow off to access the bolts for the thin spacer. the gear and shaft will come out without removing the Nut.

From what I’m seeing, the throttle shaft in the way has to pull out from the port
side, so if you’re talking about removing the “swivel” elbow, I not seeing how
that will work, but I’ll pull it off tomorrow and maybe it will make more
              sense! Thanks.

I was able to remove the big nut on the tiller that allows access to remove
the shift shaft (once the tiller and throttle shaft are out of the way) by
putting a big wrench on the nut, and slapping said wrench with a 2×2 maple
                board.
So far I’ve found no more detents other than the spring clip
that engages the three notches, just under the shifter.
I have not tore into the gear case yet though.

The reverse lock cam / ramp system appears to be the main
issue I see so far. When in neutral, the cams are on the verge of
sliding on their ramps, which is suppose to happen when
one shifts to Forward…… cams slide together, releasing the
hooks on the transom mount pin. The reverse lock “hooks”
are under spring pressure, which aids in the unwanted self shifting.

I can see where it would take little vibration for the shift lever
to jump into Forward by itself.
The bottom half of the cam / ramp has a set screw, and a flat
on the shaft. The set screw on this motor was loose, which was
                not helping maters.

I’m guessing the shift shaft spline was not oriented correctly
into the gear case, as the shift lever never did engage into
the “forward notch”, which it did, after I dropped the gear case.

I’ll look Sunday in my Mercury manual to see if they are the same. I would bet it’s just spline alignment knowing Mercury.

Jeff, I just got the 90-25500 Mercury manual the other day.
So far, I haven’t stumbled up mention of the shift shaft
reverse lock cam / ramps yet, so it may be a “Wizard” thing?
I didn’t even find a gearcase parts “blow up” for just the
Mk 25 Mercs, but there is procedures listed for many of
                    things.

Dave, disassembly is going pretty well now, but I will be sure to
contact your if needed. It will be a while before I get the new seals
etc., so there won’t be much more action on the lower unit
                        for a while.
Thanks for the past help, and offer!
