      In the attached wiring diagram it shows no ground jumper on the motor side switch terminal for the solenoid.  The way the solenoid was wired in at the junction box when I got it there was a jumper wire.  Should this jumper be added back in or should it be wired like the original diagram?  I’m not sure if there was a recommendation to add this jumper later as a safety measure? I seem to recall Frank Robb talking about not grounding marine solenoids but that might have been more to make a point as to the distinction between automotive and marine.

       

      I apologize for all the questions as I am trying to wrap up the fine details before the boat parade on the 4th!!

        the solenoid   B+ to activate  comes from the start push button …to work the solenoid’s  2nd small post must reach a ground for current flow  and activation.

        the ground is  obtained by the  safety mercury switch which prevents starting in high speed on the throttle.   check operation of the mercury switch which is a safety device .. do not bypass it with direct grounding

          Thank you sir, it makes sense now.  The Mercury switch wire was broken when I got the motor hence why the solenoid was jumped by the P.O.

          I have since replaced with a working mercury switch and will leave it wired per the wiring diagram.

            to service your oldies download & print  yourself a copy of this free service manual good to Johnson and Evinrude (cousins)   see page 492 and up  for the mercury switch operation  on the RD series

              Am confused.  Your arrow points towards the starter side of the positive on the solenoid…I’m guessing you are actually pointing out the small terminal ground leg for the solenoid winding.

                Jacques thanks for the link, I have a copy of the manual.   I just wanted to make sure there wasn’t a service bulletin or recommendation to revise after the date this version of the manual was published, but once you pointed it out it clicked why it was wired that way by the prior owner and why going forward it shouldn’t and won’t be rewired that way!

                Don you are correct, looks like I forgot to correct where the arrow was pointing when I adjusted the font size, it should indeed be pointing to the small terminal ground leg of the solenoid.

                I appreciate the help and advice!
