Head gaskets aren’t getting any cheaper. The idea of being able to inspect the condition of a cylinder through the plug hole is appealing.

      Traditional optical borescopes are expensive.

But, it’s possible to get tiny camera setups that plug into a phone or tablet or computer for $10 up. See all this stuff on amazon for example:

Wondering if anyone here has experience with this sort of equipment? Is is useful? What would you recommend?

      Thanks.

I just bought one but I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, but I wasn’t thinking of trying it out that way thanks for the idea! I’ll let you know when I try it out πŸ˜‰

Whoa, that’s way less than the co-pay on a colonoscopy. I might have to get one. πŸ˜›

I’ve heard one problem with the cheaper non medical borescopes is they are not very flexible. You can’t make a sharp 90Β° turn once it’s in the cylinder. I’ve also heard the resolution isn’t that great. A fellow I know with one said it wouldn’t show scratches on the cylinder wall. Some may be better than others though.

My ear, nose, and throat specialist retired recently and I told him I might be interested in one piece of his equipment when he did. When I pointed out his flexible camera which goes up your nose and into your throat, he just smiled and said it was quite an expensive tool. He never did call me about it when he retired.

I got one on sale – it came with a little mirror attachment (like a little dental mirror) that lets you look to the side. The camera end is about 12 mm in diameter. . . πŸ™‚

I picked one up recently. Resolution is good enough for me to pick up the lines on a 3D printed part, haven’t messed with how tight of a turn it can do, though. I think I’m happy with it.

I use mine all the time when I inspect the bores of my antique muskets. Fair picture but usable for what I do. Here is a short video from one of these cameras. I am inspecting the bore of an 1837 Brunswick. The white thing is a pipe cleaner. 😎 😎 😎 😎

Boy, that looks pretty good to me…What type of scope is it that you have? How much does it cost…
It is hard to believe that many years ago my sight was good enough to peek inside plug holes with a light and be able to see scores/scuffs!

Mine has a mirror attachment like Gary’s for viewing at 90
degreed but I find it imposable to get the mirror totally clean.
A tiny piece of dust can look like Monkeypaws pipe cleaner.

I think I paid $11 for mine from Amazon.
