Well, I put in two new OMC-branded condensers and the motor runs much better. Learned a lesson on multi-meter testing of condensers.

Have also learned a lesson on coil testing. My Fluke 77 sometimes gives an “open” reading when auto-ranging. If I manually set the range to something suitable I get a valid reading.

      Need a condenser tester?

I know I’m a bit late but for future reference: according to Clymer’s the condensers’ capacitance should be as follows: for 580321 from 18 to 22 mfr and for 580419 from 25 to 29 mfrs. Regards !

There are no old outboards, just machines so well built, they have outlasted their owners !

The 581419 caps were used to compliment the original 580197 coils used in the motors shown. The more common 580321 cap is used with the more common 584477 coils which were used in just about everything else OMC built. Since the offshore coils are meant to replace the 584477 coils, go with the lower uF rated 580321 cap if you are replacing the coils. I know the coils look the same, but they are different.

Mumbles could you expand on your explanation of the 581419 cap and coil #580197 coil. And # 580321 cap and #584477 coil? Are these for the universal magneto plate used in mid 1950’s to the 70’s outboards? If so how would you determine by looking at the parts what you have. Also if these are visually identical what year did this occur? Also would this be a part number update they made? I have never heard this before. Thank You Bill,

Here ya go, straight from the 1980 Johnson Parts Reference Guide.

I don’t know what the physical difference in the coils is but knowing OMC, if even the color of the wires insulation was different, they’d assign a new part number to it.
