We are trying to complete a rebuild on my lower unit and have it all completed with the exception of the shift level seal. How do you get to the seal? I see from the parts book that it’s a brass bushing, o-ring and a bushing gasket.

I assume that there is a procedure to remove the bushing to put the new o-ring and bushing gasket in. Any thoughts or knowledge on how to get this new O-ring in place? Special tool required?

      Thanks,

      Steven

The tool to remove the bushing is OMC tool #304514. Available at Crowley Marine for around $12 or so. Or you can also use a long 5/16″ punch like this one to knock the bushing out.

I use Bob’s method also. 5/16″ punch works great!

The punch shown in my picture is a Starrett #248D pin punch, available on-line at Grainger and several other sources for around $8.00.

                    Bob,

I too have the Starrett punch set, but I also have a Harbor Freight set that has the same sizes. Nowhere near the quality but they will do the job in this case.

I see the bushing and how you’ve described that it comes out, but it seems like the hole is too small for it to come out the other end.

It looks like the bushing a actually has a flange in it.

I’d love to see a video of this procedure.

Thanks for the help. I just want to Make sure I
Don’t mess up this procedure. It’s the last seal to replace before reassembly.

It almost looks like the bushing is in from the wrong end of the housing???
