Anybody know where I can find one of those screws for the flywheel rope sheave?

I would suggest you remove one of the other screws and run to your local hardware store and have them match it up.

The screw you are looking for is a brass oval head  10 x 28.  My two local hardware stores do not carry this size. So I purchased a 10 x 28 tap and die and use a 10 x 24 screw and make my own.  So far that all seem to be working and holding.

It is not originally a 28 pitch, it is a 30 pitch, a thread that has not been used in years…. Trust me, My Toolmakers bible says it has been too many years but that is the original thread size…30… not 28.. I have confirmed with my thread pitch gages….twice…you can rethread it to 28, but then the next guy that tries to replace them will screw it up even worse…

I found 3 on eBay for an a-25 that I will probably buy once I get the motor running…..or I’ll wait to investigate the parts pile at Tomahawk.

I don’t know how many changes were made in the flywheel screws on the Early Johnson’s or, what sizes they may have been. The ones in my OA-55 & OA-60 are 1/4 X 24, another size that has gone out of fashion. There are other screws and bolts on these motors where the threads are now obsolete. The water drain screw in the pump motors come to mind. When working on these you want to keep track of all the fasteners as some are difficult to replace.

I suspect that the rope sheave screws should be the same because the flywheel and rope sheave size and shape is the same on an a-35 I have, which indicates to me that they would not have updated a design that they already had to tooling for.   Since the a-25 was made before my a-35 and after the a, I would guess that rope sheave screws for that would work.  I’m usually good at keeping track of all screws and whatnot, but this time I was trying to take to rope sheave off for a reason I cannot currently remember, and it came off less than smooth, causing 2 of the screws to fly.  I found one and reassembled the rope sheave with the two that I had, but I was not able to find the other because it was dropped on the ground, which was filled with leaves and pine needles.  I searched a while for it, but was not successful.   I’ll have to be more careful next time…..

It’s probably magnetic.  You could try searching the area again with strong magnet.

I thought about that but it is easier just to buy a new set.
