John Deere pony motor coil transplant update-
I finished up installing the pony motor coil on
the 72A Eismann magneto for the OB35A Neptune 4 hp.
It appears to be a success. I didn’t have to butcher
up the mag plate as much as I feared, and had
not using the big rat tail file been so much fun,
I could have enlarged the hole less, and made
a better fit for my over sized grommets. For now, I reused the Wico style condenser with
the threaded end for the primary coil, kill wire,
and points connections. It tested at .32 mfd’s.
Anyone know what the John Deere Pony Coil
condensers are rated at?Moral of the story, if you try the B&S coil conversion, I hope you
have better luck then me. I’ll be using the pony motor coils
instead. Besides, they’re much easier to find and relatively
affordable.Tried uploading a video 3 times to YouTube, but it never finishes processing,
and the narrative is nothing but static, so you might want to turn your
sound off!
It does “spark” okay pulling it over by hand, but that’s problematic
doing while filming, unless you have three hands, hence the electric drill, lol.Prepare to be boarded!

July 13, 2020 at 4:44 pm #208516i am not sure where I read about the pony coil for Lauson T600. I could swear it was in the antique outboarder but can’t find that issue at the moment. Is there any retro-fitting to get the pony coil in place? or where is the description of the process. thanks

July 14, 2020 at 3:21 am #208572I have done the pony motor coil swap on a Lauson T600. What you do is grind down both sides of the center lamination to 7/16ths. Then remove some of the upper laminations to fit the hole in the new coil. Reinstall coil/laminates back on mag plate. Check if flywheel doesn’t hit the coil or laminations. Use a dremel grinder to level the high spots of the laminations to clear the flywheel magnets. I use a felt tip marker to find the high spots. That John Deere coil was used in a 6 volt system and was used to fire 2 cylinders alternatively. They do work on the Lausons as they are an alternate firing motor.
