I have a ’57 18 Johnson that I finally got around to beating apart and assessing. The bottom cylinder just has a little too much rust to hone out. The rest of the motor isn’t too bad; so I started to look for over-size pistons. They don’t seem to be available in the ’57 and ’58 parts lists, on Marineengine.com. This surprised me. What am I missing?

August 24, 2021 at 5:49 am #245389Thanks very much! Yeah, I know it’s a long shot hoping to find a piston or two; but the search is part of the fun. I think I already have some 20-over rings kicking around somewhere….

August 24, 2021 at 1:32 pm #245412Bill – I rebuilt a ’57 18hp last year and think I might have a 20-over piston out in the shop. Let me go digging and I’ll get back later tonight.

I ordered two, with ring sets, for under $100, delivered. Might be the end of Sept before I get them; but hey, I have about 99 other motors to work on….Thanks again everybody for the help and suggestions.

August 24, 2021 at 9:57 pm #245425Bill – glad you found what you needed. I searched high and low in my shop and could only find a standard size piston. Thought sure I had a 20-over but sure can’t find it now.
