Happy Holidays to all outboard enthusiasts! I have a Mercury Mark 5 that leaks oil out of the lower unit. I would like to take the prop off to check any seals but I cannot get the dang prop off. It is really stuck so I would appreciate any advice or tricks that might help. Thanks in advance. Dan in WI.

is it the prop or the nut that is stuck. if it is the prop it has clutches that are inside. the only place that it would corrode is at the nut end of the prop.

It is indeed a two blade propeller. It is the prop nut that is stuck and I want to be as careful as possible for its removal.

Items #29 & 30 are the clutch disks, 8 each.

Thank you so much everybody. With patience and gentle persuasion I think I can get it off. No rush in northern Wisconsin for several more months since it is still tip up season.

to remove the nut, you may have to drop the lower unit and put the lower driveshaft into a vise to keep things from turning. you can do the water pump at the same time.

Don’t forget the driveshaft seal. The pinion gear is held on by a thin headed bolt that requires a 6 point box end milled flat for 100% contact on the head. Use a dab of locktite red on clean threads. Shims break easy too.
Impeller cover is left hand thread too. If I remember correctly,

Hmm… is the prop nut itself left hand threded?

NO and the pump is not behind the prop but on the drive shaft . 1 914 310 7086.
