Think twice about coating your float!

I coated a float with crazy glue a couple years ago on a 7.5 HP Johnson.   I pulled the carb off recently and the coating was pealing off and plugging up the works!  Not gonna do that again!

There is a product that is better suited to this job than Krazy Glue. Some use model airplane dope to coat their floats. Personally, I never use anything to coat them. If they are naked and they float, they’re good to go. If they sink, throw it out and replace it because once the cork has shown it will absorb fuel and get heavy, there’s really no saving it except for a sawhorse queen motor. Closed cell foam floats are far superior and its easy to work with as far as cutting it so maybe consider making floats if you can’t purchase replacements.

After having the same thing happen to me and reading here that cork floats didn’t need to be sealed, I started this little test to know if in fact that was true. Over 9 years later that cork is still floating. I’m away and cant provide the latest result but I found this image from an earlier thread.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

I love that test Mister Tubs!   It’s done with ethanol fuel!  Imagine that!  I run ethanol fuel in everything I own.  Thanks for posting it again.

Yup I have a couple kits in my stash.  That particular float was is good shape so I thought I would give it a try.

I prefer ethanol as well. There is a 100 ways water can get into the gas. This is just one. With ethanol water gets suspended in the fuel and just passes through the motor. The picture at the end shows where the water can end up with plain fuel. Get enough in a float bowl and you’ll be paddling. Every method l have tried to clean out tanks always leaves a little gunk in the seam.  The way I use my motors, using fuel having ethanol, it’s all gone when I get home at the end of summer. I’ve used Butyrate Dope and althought not “Tubs Tested” it seems to be doing alright thus far.
South Bend floats & Handitwin poppet valve stop.

The key to using fuel with Ethanol in it is to use it up. Do not leave it in the tank. I use strictly pump gas with ethanol in everything, but I drain whatever I don’t use at the end of the season.
