I recall someone had a nice Youtube video showing how to make a tool to cut out packings for OMC carb needles from gasket material using the tool and a hardwood block. Should have bookmarked the video as I can not find it now. Does anyone remember this?
Thanks and Happy New Year.
December 26, 2023 at 3:45 pm #283491How about these?
December 26, 2023 at 4:21 pm #283492Thank you. I need to get those. 🙂
There also was a tool that looked like it would be easy on a lathe and would always punch out concentrically.

Thank you, that’s it!

December 26, 2023 at 5:32 pm #283495I don’t know if he has any left, but I was able to purchase one of these tools from Ben about a month ago or so. The tool works great, punches the packing out very well. I have not had a chance to put the packings to the ultimate test of running the motor and adjusting the carb needles, but from what my newby eyes see I’m thinking everything is going to work well.
I DM’d Ben using Messenger (once my old self figured out how) and he got right back to me.
Doesn’t sound like he’s going to continue to make them, perhaps if more folks requested he would take a shot at making another run of them? I wouldn’t turn down a chance to get a 2nd one for a backup.
Thanks
Best Regards,

December 26, 2023 at 11:32 pm #283510I seem to recall there was an Outboarder article on making them.

August 13, 2026 at 9:51 am #326246I made a tool and used it to punch out leather washers. They seem to be too soft and disintegrate in use. I will try some other gasket material. Does anyone recommend a particular gasket material?
Brought back this old thread as it may be of general interest. 🙂

August 15, 2026 at 6:40 am #326398For what its worth.
I watched the video
The gentleman said he uses 1/16 inch Fel-pro materiel.
I googled these words and came up with this
https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/fel-pro/fel-pro-gasket-material/fel0/3018
There are also other kinds of 1/16 inch Fel-pro materiel

I have not tried any of them
Please keep us updatedAugust 16, 2026 at 11:22 pm #326511Well let me try to explain how I have been making those packing’s. Over the years I have tried gasket material and leather. Neither work worth a hoot. Now I am using the rubber flap that drags behind a push lawn mower. Time will tell on that stuff. Anyway you need a 1/4″ hole punch, a 3/8″ hole punch a hammer a 1/4″ allen bolt about an inch long and a hardwood block. Drill a 1/4 hole in your block deep enough to place the allen bolt all the way in so just the head sticks out. Next punch a 1/4″ hole in what ever material you are using. Push the 1/4″ bolt through the punched hole then slide the bolt and material into the hole you drilled in your hardwood block. The 3/8″ hole punch should fit over the bolt head. Smack it with your hammer. Works for me! Hopefully I can get some pictures to post. You can also make gaskets for the fill plugs on gear case plugs. If you can find the right size bolt. I ground a 3/8″ bolt head down to fit to fit my 9/16″ punch. That is another story. Hope this makes some sense
