I’m glad my video was found. I do not have any of these punch tools left at this time. I may get time to get a few sets made this fall/winter. I’m not sure what the cost will be yet. Material has gone up a lot and available time has gone the other direction.
I use Fel-Pro 1/16″ gray rubberized fiber gasket material to make the packing washers. It seems to hold up well and work very much like the OEM pieces. I have tried other gray fiber gasket material and while it works, it seems to be more prone to breaking apart. I have not tried their blue fiber gasket material to see how it works. It seems reasonably well-suited to the task.

August 18, 2026 at 7:27 am #326574I bought one of Ben’s packing tools a few years ago and I love it. (I use it on a flattened out cereal box and it seems to be easier on the blades than on wood).
But whatever method you use to make them it’s a good idea to use the nylon washer that came with the kits. I don’t know if they were included in the earlier kits because they don’t show up in the parts diagrams until the 70s I think. But using them between the packing and the nut helps to keep the packing from getting damaged too much. And it creates a nice smooth feel when adjusting too.
