Ok here is a shot of the forward gear and the clutch dog. It looks as there is some minor wear on the face of the gear.
Bill I got the clutch dog from Dan Gano. Ordered it by part number so I think it’s the correct one, and the two washers were present.
Frank checked the prop hub and its good. What do you think of the forward gear?
Buccaneer the drive shaft looks ok.
Don there was no splintered metal actually found. That what I thought I was going to find, but everything looked fine inside the gearcase.
So at this point my current plan is the new forward gear, and to double check the orientation of the shift shaft on final assembly??
      Keep em coming.

Well I must say it looks much better than I expected.

Looks like there is a fresh wear pattern on the face of the clutch dog ears and definitely some wear on the face of the ears of the forward gear like they were slipping or skipping over each other. Hard to believe it would do that unless the ears on the gear were worn real deep.

Perhaps the shift cradle/linkage/aluminum fork is bent or out of place. I don’t see anything in your pictures that would cause violent jumping…
Once it is back together, I would check for slop in the shift shaft/lever, and check the shift lever adjustment to ensure forward gear is engaging completely…

Update….installed a new forward gear, double checked the the linkage, and it now runs fine. Shifts beautifully, no shake on the shift lever. Go figure. So I guess the takeaway here is that old parts that look ok sometimes aren’t.

You scared it into submission with your thoroughness. It decided it wasn’t going to be able to beat you, so it gave up. I have to say, that’s one of the BEST used forward gears I have even seen.

                    Long live American manufacturing!
