      No need to take the gearcase apart or change the rod. You can use a chainsaw file to cut a new notch for the connector bolt, exactly 5" below the existing notch. Then cut 5" off the rod. You don’t have to completely encircle the rod with the notch, just where the bolt goes through.
      I used to do it all the time.

        Same with the water tube. Just be sure to file off all the rough edges. . . 😉

          So the only thing I really need is a driveshaft.

            And the 5" shorter bolt at the rear of the gearcase.
