      It sounds like the engine is cooling OK if your hand is getting some spray while holding it behind the relief outlets. You can do the water pump job over the winter if you plan to keep the engine. Let it go "as is" if you plan to sell it….

        Perfect, I just wanted to make sure I didn’t miss something. Kind of a bad design, the oil doesn’t want to come out… It took about 20 minutes to drain it…

          I have a ’84 model Johnson that is the same motor. I was surprised about the lower unit drain also. Mine just spits a strong mist of water from the holes, too. I even replaced the pump and it still did about the same. I guess mine is cooling good enough because I ran it a half hour with no problems, so yours is probably OK too….they’re different for sure!
