As a psychologist, I’d say it’s only an addiction if it impairs one or more important life functions.
(Or, maybe I’m just rationalizing my own life choices).

I really feel the need to comment to your response
epically today. While its not uncommon for someone
to buy stuff because " it was so cheap I couldn’t pass
it up" I’ve always searched out from my "I want one"
list what I would really enjoy "IF" I could afford it.
Spending money on something you don’t really want,
getting into debt, can keep you from getting what you
wish for. So on this day, in 2003, 14 years ago,
at 58, I got the thing that was at the top of list. My
freedom. It was the last day I had to go to work.December 19, 2017 at 6:43 pm #68786My wife is a collector. She has more collectibles than I do. So I don’t have someone telling me I have too many of anything because she always has more than I do. My interest in outboards tends to run in cycles. I gather up a bunch, mess with them, and sell them. I’m on my second round of outboards. The first round were the rarer of the oldest stuff, now I"m in the 50’s & 60’s category due mostly to never having been able to afford the 60’s era motors back in the day. Once I work on one I need to move on to something different. I have an old military generator that I play with. Something totally different and built like a tank. It’s too big and heavy for any purpose I have but I never got into the military outboards so maybe this is a result of that. I never stray from outboards because they are not difficult to store and I can pull one out, put it away, and pull another one to play with. Can’t do that easily with cars.
December 19, 2017 at 7:04 pm #68788I was a kid in the 1950s at my parents camp on the lake. That was the time of the boating craze and the classic outboard motors and a very optimistic time in the country. The 1950s motors were the ones I admired as a kid. Take an old boat and one of those "old friend" motors out. open it up, here it sing, and the thrill is still there. Time travel is possible. To the younger people who do not know that era, Congratulations on your discovery! 😀

Me at age 57 … 10 years ago I did it to them before they did it to me ! I deprived them of my 40 years experience in the Telco when they said my experience was not what the company needed to face the changing world of Telecoms. I never regretted my move to the busy world of freedom 😆
