Later models added detent balls and spring to the propeller shaft. This minimized the effect of slop in the shift lineage and extended the life of the shifter dogs. . . 😉

I learned a valuable lesson when updating a 40hp to the spring ball/clutch dog set up…..
Put it all together with the new prop shaft/clutch dog, balls and spring, sealed it up and pressure tested….
Everything was fine until I tried to shift it into either gear from neutral, wouldn’t do shift into either gear!
Turns out I violated one of my own rules, don’t rewrite the price book/manual when performing your own "updates". In order for this original swap to have worked, I would have had to update the forward and reverse gears as well…So, had to pull it all apart and get the later style gears…
I guess the original prop shaft number does not supercede to the later style for a reason!
