XR55, I found one JD corn head grease video on YouTube, but
      a short one…..

I’ll have to inspect the cooling system better tomorrow to see
if I can figure it out, but it sound like you’re saying the 1/2" tube
in the exhaust leg is the water "exit" ?
      Thanks!

XR55, I looked at the water cooled muffler a little closer today.
I now see that at least part of the muffler is "double walled",
with the water flowing inside. I had some plugging, but managed
to blow sand all over the workbench!
Is it worth my time to pop the core plugs out of the muffler and exhaust
leg to check for further plugging?

The answer is generally "no’ on removing the plugs. Just flush it out well and it will be fine.

I found a pic showing the water supply tubes below the powerhead and the exit tube for water from the muffler.

Thixotropic….. new word of the day I learned from the Corn Head Video!
Going to the big city after pay day, and will see if the JD dealer is still there,
and perhaps get a few tubes.

Mumbles, looks like a pretty stout driveshaft on the PO’s!
Is it just 3 nuts to remove to drop the gear case off? I looked
at mine briefly, and wondered how to take it apart, and how
the gears come out afterwards…… don’t look like anything
I’ve ever worked on to date!
What’s the purty paint you’re using?
                Thanks!

No paint there! That’s the way it looked after removing all the dirt and grease on it after it sat in a guys shed for 25+ years. I did have a can of Sea Mist Green though for touching up the carb and cylinders a bit. It never got started this past summer so if it runs good next year, it might get a complete, plus decal. ☺

Mumbles, mine looks like it spent the last 30 years
in a wind blown desert…… hardly any paint!
Are those eyelets on the bottom of your muffler for
remote steering hook-up? Mine has a stud on each
                    side with a square nut.

                      quote Buccaneer:

Either that or for hanging your catch on at the end of the day for a photo shoot.
