Both cables come of the top of the steering wheel drum?Make sure the motor swivels easily when not hooked to cables.

Okay that could be the problem in the diagram it looks like the wire comes off the bottom of the inside drum. So both should come off the top of the drum?

DEPENDS ON WHERE THE STEERING IS HOOKE UP. IF IN THE FRONT THAT IS TRUE UNLESS YOU RUN DOWN ONE SIDE ONLY. COMES OFF THE BOTTOM IF THE HOOKUP IS ON THE REAR OF THE MOTOR LIKE MOST RACE MOTORS.

The wires run down both sides of the boat, the drum is on the steering wheel under the dash just to clarify.

With one cable on each side of the boat, both cables need to wind off the top of the drum.

You’re in for a BIG surprise if you get them backwards . . . 😮

I don’t mean to hi-jack the thread, but can anyone tell me what size / lay / material the cable should be? I’ve been using rope (Yeah, I know…), and I want to re-do it properly.

Typically use vinyl coated wire rope (cable). Diameter size depends on what size pulleys you are using.

’57 Johnson 35HP…the pulleys look like they’re about 2" diameter, but the groove isn’t very big at all….

Take one of the pulleys with you to a supply house and do a trial fit. Maybe 3/16" diameter.
