Picked up a 1957 Javelin today. The motor itself was painted at some point and needs to be redone, but the hood seems to be original??? It has some wear, perhaps wear canvas or something. The chrome is in real good shape, with the exception of some wear on the door. With the deal, I got a Johnson simplex shifter and cables, Excellent wiring harness and junction box, and a Johnson Mile Master pressure tank…very shiny inside but could use some paint. The tank seems to be earlier…has baffles inside which I have not seen before…definite keeper!
Does it run? Not sure, but the guy said he used it last summer…which I believe. To be honest, I really got the motor for the hood…and paid for it…$475.
A lot of money, but the chrome is worth that in my opinion.
What do you think…fair deal? Bad deal? Great deal???

You spent the money, so don’t water down your fun now. Enjoy it and share if you feel like it – but asking if its a "good or bad deal" after you already own it is akin to locking the barn after the horse escapes…..
That’s my opinion anyway.
Best,

If you have too many, AND not enough, you're a collector.
May 27, 2018 at 12:29 pm #76810Your hood has the cover over the recoil handle, which is often missing on the Goldens. If you compare what you paid to the cost of getting parts re-chromed, I’d say it’s a good purchase.

A nice work of art. Sadly, you can’t
say the same for the new ones.
Then again, with all the plastic and electronics,
I don’t think our grandchildren will be collecting
the 2018 Johnsons sixty years from now.well they wont be collecting 2005 ETEC the way the lower exhaust cowling covers are cracking and $ 600 per halves 😡

May 27, 2018 at 12:48 pm #76814That same $475 would only be a down payment on a new 35 horse outboard. Look at the prices on eBay for a good pressure tank, controls, and junction box with a harness. The motor was almost free- at least that’s how I would explain it to my wife.

May 27, 2018 at 1:31 pm #76816Looks like a good deal from here.
I hear they are not making them any more.
