I share Bill’s approach. I feel they would have to be really, really bad to have to replace them. Cleaning up the old ones and resetting them has always worked well for me.
I feel most if not all of us that play with older motors take this approach, as we don’t have the luxury of just ordering a new set.Give it a try.
Respectfully,
December 30, 2020 at 11:52 am #226400I am replacing the condensers with new and have dressed the points but they are pretty worn out and I suspect they won’t last much longer. Anybody know where I can get a pair of the old school points either NOS or in really good used condition?
December 30, 2020 at 7:31 pm #226467Try looking on ebay for “nos omc points” . If postage from Canada to the States wasn’t absurd I’d send you a set.
Another option is to look for a cheap parts motor. That’s how this hobby starts, cause now you want to get another part motor to get the first part motor running 🙂
Another (pessimistic) thing to consider regarding the coils is they may look ok, but be open internally.

Ha! Most of the time I get a parts motor, I get it to be a runner and end up at square one again, looking around again for a parts motor!
Just a heads up Wedgie, but the points in the link you provided are P/N 581207 and are used in the low tension mags as found in the ’74 – ’76 9.9/15 horse motors and a couple others of that era. The common universal mag as found on the ’56 RD use P/N 580148. I can’t remember what the exact difference in them is but they are slightly different from each other.
Looking at the Ebay points again, I think they might be 580148 points and packaged wrong. The 581207 points I’ve seen were one piece and the slot for the adjusting cam was different.
December 30, 2020 at 11:22 pm #226501oops, I carelessly posted the first link I came across on the interscreen giggle search. My bad.
Wonder if these are any good ? https://www.ebay.ca/itm/2-CONTACT-SET-POINTS-JOHNSON-EVINRUDE-GALE-HIAWATHA-580148-580173-SABER-USA/133610446188?hash=item1f1bcd9d6c:g:HAQAAOSwbdNfnGJy
Of course you could jest get a pair of ATOM modules and eliminate the points and condenser….. but of course they are getting pretty hard to find.

Good price. if this is legit I would snap them up. http://www.2040-parts.com/napa-185101-magnatune-ignition-kit-for-2-cylinder-outboards-new-in-box-i193720/
December 31, 2020 at 4:22 pm #226644Thanks for the suggestion! I found a set on eBay and they’re on their way. A little pricey but the peace of mind is worth the fare. I plan to put this motor on my ’56 Crestliner Viking Deluxe which means I will need a motor for the Wagemaker Seafarer that this motor is coming off of. I’m looking for a nice condition ’57 or ’58 Johnson 35 or 50hp Super Seahorse to put on the Seafarer so if anyone knows of a good one please let me know. I put an add in the classified section so you may see it there…
January 1, 2021 at 8:59 pm #226759If you find you have a wet plug and it is the bottom one, check to see if it is water or fuel making it wet. Water can slip in through the lower crankshaft seal and in the early stages make for crappy running at high speed.
January 3, 2021 at 6:27 pm #226947Don’t expect miracle speed from that 30 HP. The 1956 30 was really a well-tuned 1955 25 HP. Same cubic inches, etc. A lot of people that traded their 25s for the 30 were disappointed in having very little performance improvement. with the right prop and a light enough boat, you may get 28-30 MPH. The 1957 35 HP that replaced it was a definite step up.
DaveJanuary 9, 2021 at 6:35 pm #227306The NOS points came in so today I replaced the points, condensers, spark plug wires and the coils. While I had the carburetor intake silencer off I decided to see if the throttle valve was moving to the fully horizontal position when I had the gear lever in forward and the throttle lever in wide open position. Interestingly it was completely vertical and was not moving at all as I advanced the throttle back and forth. I checked all the linkages and they all seem to be in the correct positions and moving when I advance the throttle. Any ideas of what I might have done to create this situation?
