Its a silicone heat sink material from electronic stores to suit TO220 transistor shape.

I bought a module for my old Stihl chainsaw recently. Not sure if it’s the same thing, but I believe it works the same way. It mounts externally (coil is external to flywheel on my saw) and it replaces both the points and condenser. Worked really well! I might snag a pair of them at some point and see if and how they work in an outboard mounted under the flywheel.

The Atoms were color coded for different applications and the red ones are what you want for outboard motors.

My attempt with a high voltage Darlington @ 300v and testing with a IGBT @ 430v.

Picture of device Installed, I have video but the file is too big for Photobucket. I can spin the flywheel with my hand and get a nice fat spark with every revolution.

That’s a thing of beauty Ken.

                        quote Ken W:

                        Neato!

It seems like most of the power darlingtons suitable for the "ATOM" circuit are no longer made, and replaced by IGBTs in new applications.

Your build is VERY tidy! It looks printed circuit board ready!
