If the vertical rod hits its stop with everything connected, that can only leave a bent or loose link arm or a worn pin on top of the vertical rod as the problem.

I have determined that the problem is a worn stud.
          I have about a 1/8 inch play.
I’m not going to worry about unless other wise told.

Not sure if I’m seeing it right but as Richard said, you could still be off one tooth?

Yes, does appear to be off by one tooth. But, it is off in the direction of being over advanced….Perhaps the extra tension pushing on the vertical throttle rod helped wear out the pin….he screw definitely looks buggered up, so someone has been in there before…

The vertical I-beam shaped link is twisted. I’ve had a couple of OMC engines with the problem.. You may be able to twist it back to it’s correct shape, or better yet, find an unmolested used one. Best of luck. R.T.

The bottom of vertical rod has a nylon cross bar that couples the assembly.
Take our the vertical bar and check the cross bar.
Look under the rubber boot to see if it is broken.
I have had a motor with one end broken and levers all moved but not completely.

Is it shifted to forward? I have tried them in neutral and then realized my mistake and shifted it to release the neutral throttle stop and then get full travel.

You can tell a 1956 mag plate because it won’t work with a 1955 flywheel. In 1956 they added a ring to the bottom of the flywheel that fits a slot in the mag plate. It was intended to better seal the magneto.
