Dan, thanks for the confirmation on the parts and wisdom.
Frank, regarding “running” it, who knows, the
game may already be over, but you make a good point.
With the compression being on the low end, not sure
if it’s going to be worth putting money into, but
I’ll tear into it in the future.
Am kind of curious though what an outboard with
bad wrist pins sounds like. 😆

You will hear a pronounced ‘klackity-klack", especially at idle.

Here’s a worst case scenario when the circlips go south and the pins start walking around.

I did some checking out this morning, and I
do have the dreaded “CLUNK” on the wrist pin
test. Not real impressed with the compression either,
64 & 70 psi. Good news is it had spark, lol.

The ugly one of my three had only about 68psi of compression before I started running it. I have not measured it since then but it’s a great runner. If you’ve got the clunk, you may end up going through the powerhead, or just looking for a replacement. At 40 bucks, you’re still in pretty good shape on the investment if you ask me. If it were mine I would at least start it and see what it sounds like. If it’s clattering, pull the cylinder head and check for cylinder damage. If the cylinders are still good tear it down and replace the pistons, wristpins, and rebush the rods if they need it.

Ben, I like working on outboards, and the thrill of victory when
I hear them run the first time. Just not sure of my overall strategy
of spending more money than they’re worth to fix them up,
for a motor I don’t really need, and that doesn’t fit my "collection"
direction. Only problem is, I don’t know what my "collection direction"
is some days. Some days it’s "pre 1950’s", and other days
it’s "one" of every model ever made, lol.
That said, I’ve already been thinking about "parts engines"
            for the Sportwin!
I’m anxious to take a peek inside the motor, but I need to concentrate
on the Elto for a while!

              Buc,
I understand everything you are saying. I try not to spend more than they are worth to fix them up too, but if it’s a keeper for my collection I don’t worry about it as much. As far as "collection direction," mine is largely classic OMC with 1950s-60s being the largest concentration. I do enjoy the antiques also so my collection direction is sort of all over the place, so I certainly get that. Those are great motors but if you decide you don’t want to deal with it, bring it with you to Tomahawk and I’ll give you the 40 bucks and haul it home with me. 😉

Another thing to consider might be broken upper motor mounts which could be allowing the engine to vibrate and clatter also…
