Here’s the Speeditwin magneto I’m going to use on my
Elto Speedster. I’ve never run across a coil set up like
this where the secondary leads went into a bakelite
insulator and the lead ends basically just butted up
against the ends of the spark plug wires that poke into
the insulator towers from the bottom side.

I’m thinking of eliminating this set up and just solder
on new plug wires near the coil, and using regular
      grommets in the mag plate.
Doesn’t this sound more fool proof?

I haven’t actually tested the coil yet, but can this
on be converted to OMC universal coils?

Should be able to get some OMC
coils in there without to much
          effort similar to this magneto.
Just be sure they both face in
          the same direction.
Here is a slide show of a Johnson
I did years ago that shows the
          steps for this motor. Some
          motors are easier, some harder
but the concept is the same.

Thanks Tubs. Looks like the hardest part is getting
the old laminate out of the coil.

Would one of those dual post surplus military coils work ? ? ?

I donโ€™t think you can get the laminates out
without damaging the insulation on the coil.
I tried to get the laminates out of 2 Bendix
coils and just ended up ruining them. If
you can get the laminates out I would think
you could come up way to use them.

Here what happened when I tried to get the
laminates out of some Bendix coils.

I tried to test the Speeditwin coil with the OHM meter before
I called it a day. Primary was fine, but I couldn’t get a consistant
reading on the secondary. It was was all over the place, 18K, 15K,
9K, or OL (open loop). My meter is an auto range meter, and
some times I think it’s wacky, but I suppose it could be a loose
secondary lead under the case, etc.
Anyone else have problems with inconsistent readings some times?
Will throw it on the Stevens tester tomorrow and see what
                      happens!

To get the laminates out of a bendix coil you need to remove the center laminates first. Then work outwards till they are all out. Of course screwing them up when doing this is expected. I have done one of these and felt very lucky to have been successful.
