Thanks , I’ll check it out.
January 7, 2021 at 4:26 pm #227180So I cleaned the inside of my KD4 gas tank with 1500 bb,s and varsol . Shake and bake method. Works great. Taking the bb’s out and this came out of the tank as well. Any idea what it is?
January 7, 2021 at 4:27 pm #227183It says Zenith which is probably a carb part but for what?
January 7, 2021 at 4:29 pm #227184Why would someone do this. Welded together. Should I cut apart or leave?
January 7, 2021 at 9:13 pm #227205All of the aluminum clamp assemblies have the two halves welded together except some early pre ww2 versions.
It is not uncommon to see repair welds on clamp brackets that were damage post factory. The brass part you found in gas tank is part of the fuel filter that
broke off the shut off valve or fitting. The filter is usually broken off,
clogged or corroded or all of the above.
Repair MAY be possible. See what others say.January 7, 2021 at 10:03 pm #227206Just seems strange to weld something when there is a screw/bolt as well.
I thought that might be a filter of some sorts but didn’t see how it would connect?January 8, 2021 at 3:57 pm #227252Kiekhaefer, both man and company did things their way. Labor and other costs figure into cost to manufacture a product, The basic design of the 5.5 cu in single and 11 cu in twin K Model Mercury (and Wizards) remained the same while MANY improvements in detail were made. What was right stayed, what was wrong got changed.
The clamp haves are a right and a left, which could lead to confusion
on the assembly line amd replacement parts. With the halves welded into a single unit the problem goes away.January 8, 2021 at 7:22 pm #227257Wow. Love hearing about the old stuff.
Thanks guysJanuary 9, 2021 at 7:05 am #227283I would advise you to check the fitment, but the “01” picture appears to me to show the fuel tank fuel filter element still attached to it’s retaining nut, where the nut presses into the fuel shut-off valve. As the pictures are quite small for me to see, “02” might be where a portion of the fuel filter element was broken-off. We do have new old stock fuel filter elements, but the nut would have to be removed and reinstalled into the fuel shut-off valve, or another (carefully) created from a larger brass or stainless “square nut”. (stove bolt nut). I would apply some Teflon pipe sealant to the fuel shut-off valve threads before installing to the fuel tank to better ensure against an external fuel leak..
