What pressure to you all test with? 2 or 3 PISG? More? Less?

Making a pressure tester is on my “list”. I would think it would
be handy also when you know you have a leak, but not sure
where. Haven’t tried draining the LU yet. Clean and sandblaster
some parts this morning. All afternoon has been mowing and
tending gardens. 🙁
Thanks.quote fleetwin:Just don’t be fooled by faulty gage set ups…I am not criticizing home made stuff, I have had plenty of Stevens testers show false leakage in the gearcase, when the true problem was a gage issue, hose, valve etc…
I guess what I am saying is that if the gear lube comes out without showing signs of water, I would probably just refill and run it…Needless to say, I would change gear lube frequently to ensure all is well. Running it “as is” will give you a chance to make sure the clutch dog is OK as well…
Needless to say, if the lube shows signs of water, then you should pressure test to find the actual problem before resealing…
Oftentimes test equipment that was designed to help us, ends up confusing us with false readings/wrong conclusions….Yes, having a decent/reliable pressure tester is a must, just like the OMC flywheel puller kit….I like the designs shown here, very simple, I like the idea of using a bicycle pump to make sure you don’t over pressurize the gearcase….
I guess sometimes it is best to "not look for problems where there aren’t any…."July 12, 2018 at 8:17 pm #79452I made me a lower unit pressure tester this morning.
Hopefully I didn’t infringed upon one of your patents. 😮
Hooked it up to the subject motor and gave it a few pumps
and heard air leaking right away. Some soap suds confirmed
it was the shift rod seal.
The LU oil I drained out was fresh as a new picked daisy,
but the PO probably changed it before it was laid up.
No clue of how many years since it was run.Prepare to be boarded!

July 12, 2018 at 10:14 pm #79457I think I’ll let "manufacturing" tools for sale up to Richard!
I had all the stuff on hand, but it took me about 2-1/2 hours
to get er done. My mere lathe skills are "on the job training",
and I do a lot of "winging it".Prepare to be boarded!

July 12, 2018 at 11:53 pm #79463What PSI do you test to?
July 13, 2018 at 12:25 am #79464Ben, I must admit, I did look at your tester again before I headed out
to the garage this morning. 😀quote Fisherman6:Nice job Buc! It looks like it may have been inspired by mine. Glad to be an inspiration if in fact it was. No patent infringements here. 😉

July 13, 2018 at 12:31 am #79465I’m not sure myself. What’s the general rule fellows?
My shift shaft seal was leaking so bad it didn’t hold
any pressure, but the gauge would bounce up to 3 to 5 psi
as I ran the tire pump.quote NJ-boatbuilder57:What PSI do you test to?Prepare to be boarded!
