Today the magneto gods were in a good mood. I got the mag done on my Johnson AB-25, and I finished up the mag for this Evinrude. New condenser and plug wires installed.

I drilled the bakelite cover to allow running the wires through to the buttons on the military coil. Looks original from the outside.

You can see the solder joints under the cover. They got a bit of liquid tape after this pic.

      All closed up.

After all this I even had spark at the plugs. The lighting stuff will need to wait until I can run it.

Pretty nice that you can retain that bottom cover to hide
the Military coil. Will have to change your handle to
Mr. Magneto! Keep up the good work, and we want to
see a video of both motors running.

          Prepare to be boarded!

            Tom,

I’m going to think long and hard before I bring another Evinrude home! Seriously though, it is rewarding to make things work again. Now I have to figure out the gear lash in the lower unit.

I started refurbishing the magneto today. I forgot to take pics. I will add some tomorrow when I resume.

David…..Can you post pics and text showing how you went about removing the Bendix laminates?  Thanks!  Great project there!

              Chuck,

I didn’t take any pictures of this process. Basically what I did is cut the laminates off close to the coil with a hack saw. Then drill down through the laminate as far as you dare. I used my trusty Walker-Turner drill press. Then get a long punch that fits the hole and drive the center laminates out. Sometimes they come easy, sometimes not! Then just work at the remaining laminates to get them out.

People seem to be getting better at the process.  Looking back over older posts on here regarding the laminate removal on Bendix coils seems to indicate a high frustration rate and an even higher failure rate.  I had been thinking it was  essentially impossible.

Your success along with o couple of other posters seems to indicate that skills are getting honed a bit.

I wonder if all of the Bendix style coils available for sale today are created equal in this respect?  Maybe there was more than one supplier for the so-called “Military Style” coil?

I think you are correct. I have had a few of these coils that the laminates practically slipped right out. No rhyme or reason!

I found the break in the secondary winding.

                  Just kidding.
