In the January 1992 edition of the Antique Outboarder, Tom Manley wrote about how to replace the original lock cylinder with a modern part. Chances are that even if you had the key, the lock might be seized up anyway. But I guess maybe a locksmith could always make you a key that would fit.

April 1, 2026 at 1:41 pm #313393The “IGN” port allows hooking up a battery for easier starting.  The tiller grip will not be the same as the early Johnson motors since it needs a hole for the shift rod.

Can you add any information about the “Light” plug thingy?
I spent some time today cleaning the cylinders and wound up breaking a ring trying to unstick it. Something else to add to the list!

Let me know any parts you need for the motor, and whether you’ll be at Lincoln’s meet on Saturday. Pretty sure I have rings for you, and a transom bracket with a lock that works. I have the mag plate, too, if you still need it. I don’t have any coils, props, or carbs, but most anything else.

April 2, 2026 at 4:46 pm #313632RE the light plug thingy: The light in the throttle arm should have a switch lever on it that rotates the bulb to the on / off positions. I’m pretty sure it’s bypassed if the auxiliary light is used. There should be a brass hood there. A steel one from John Deere will fit.

I will be there Saturday. I could use a couple rings. The rest I think I have covered. I don’t really need a transom bracket that locks 😎
Thanks and looking forward to seeing you on Saturday.
